The Medical Council of New Zealand, with a history spanning over a century, oversees the registration of doctors in the country. It also regulates assessment, training, and the jurisdiction of the healthcare system and its professionals.

Pathways for Medical Registration in New Zealand
For International Medical Graduates (IMGs), it's crucial to note that New Zealand does not conduct its own postgraduate entrance exam. However, regardless of the pathway chosen, IMGs must hold a postgraduate qualification obtained after clearing exams like PLAB, MCCQE, AMC CAT MCQ, or USMLE. Additionally, they must pass the NZREX exam.

There are three distinct pathways, termed as Scopes, to achieve medical registration in New Zealand:

General Scope: This registration is for resident doctors and those undergoing vocational training. It includes:
Medical graduates from New Zealand or Australia who are yet to commence their internship.
Graduates who have completed their internship and postgraduate training in Australia or New Zealand.
Vocational Scope: Reserved for specialists, this scope includes various categories based on qualifications and experience.

Special Purpose Scope: Offers limited registration for specific purposes such as training, research, or disaster management.
